GOODLETTSVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Dollar General is boosting its bid for rival Family Dollar to approximately $9.1 billion and says it's now willing to more than double the number of stores it would shed to avoid trouble with regulators.

LEXINGTON, N.C. (AP) - Alcoa is delaying its plans to draw down High Rock Lake by about two weeks. Company officials say they delayed the start to give people a few more weeks of higher water levels.

LUMBERTON, N.C. (AP) - Half brothers who have spent 30 years in prison for the killing and rape of an 11-year-old girl in North Carolina are asking to be released. Lawyers for 50-year-old Henry McCollum and 46-year-old Leon Brown say DNA analysis of a cigarette butt found at the crime scene in Robeson County link it to a man serving a life sentence for a similar rape and killing that took place a month later.

CERRO GORDO, N.C. (AP) - Authorities say a 17-month-old boy has drowned after he managed to get into an above ground pool at his family's home in Columbus County. Assistant Coroner William Hannah told local media outlets that Tristen Stewart was found floating face down in the pool around 4 p.m. Sunday at the home near Cerro Gordo.
