RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - North Carolina workers are finding more doors opening to jobs. Federal labor statistics show that North Carolina had the country's second-largest employment increase in March, adding nearly 20,000 jobs. North Carolina's jobless rate also was below the national average for the second straight month.
RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - Researchers at North Carolina State University say farmers along the Dan River can use surface water for crops and livestock despite a massive toxic coal ash spill more than two months ago. They say test samples show that lead, arsenic, copper and other contaminates have settled to the river bottom.
HATTERAS ISLAND, N.C. (AP) - Boat owners are concerned that the start of charter fishing season may be delayed because the Oregon Inlet is clogged with sand. The inlet is clogged because of storms from the north that generally push sand into the channel. Charter fishing season typically begins Easter weekend.
GREENVILLE, N.C. (AP) - Investigators in Pitt County say a 75-year-old man has died after his tractor jumped into gear and pinned him under a tire. Police say Thomas Darden was moving a steel table with his tractor when he stepped off to adjust a cable. It's believed the tractor jumped into gear and knocked him down.
