PITTSBURGH (AP) - Fozzy Whittaker ran for a 2-yard touchdown, Graham Gano added a short field goal and the Carolina Panthers beat the listless Pittsburgh Steelers 10-0 in the preseason finale Thursday night. The Panthers held the Steelers to just 185 total yards. Both teams sat their star players.

(AP) - Tony Stewart will return to Sprint Cup competition Sunday night at Atlanta Motor Speedway, ending a three-race hiatus after his car struck and killed a fellow driver during a dirt-track race. The three-time NASCAR champion has not raced since Aug. 9, when he hit Kevin Ward Jr. at a sprint car event in upstate New York.

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) - North Carolina says the NCAA has cleared defensive tackle Ethan Farmer to play after resolving an unspecified eligibility issue. The fifth-year senior started all 13 games last year and was the only returning starter on the line.

BUIES CREEK, N.C. (AP) - Kalif Phillips ran for three touchdowns to lead Charlotte to a 33-9 victory over Campbell on Thursday night in the season opener for both teams. Phillips scored on a 1-yard run midway through the third quarter and followed it up with 1- and 10-yard TD runs to help Charlotte push its lead to 27-3.
