CALGARY, Alberta (AP) - Chris Butler scored at 4:56 of overtime to give the Calgary Flames a 2-1 victory over the Carolina Hurricanes on Thursday night. Brian McGrattan also scored for Calgary and Paul Byron had two assists, hours after the struggling Flames fired general manager Jay Feaster and assistant John Weisbrod.
ASHEVILLE, N.C. (AP) - D.J. Cunningham scored 16 points, Jaron Lane 15 and twelve players scored in UNC Asheville's 92-56 romp past NAIA Bluefield on Thursday night. Lane, Cunningham, Andrew Rowsey and Jaleel Roberts all scored early as the Bulldogs jumped out 11-4, never trailed and led by 20 at halftime.
ELON, N.C. (AP) - Elon has hired Ball State assistant Rich Skrosky as its football coach. Athletic director Dave Blank announced the hiring Thursday. Skrosky was on Pete Lembo's staff at Elon from 2006-10 before following him to Ball State, where he spent the past three seasons as the Cardinals' offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach.
DURHAM, N.C. (AP) - Chick-fil-A Bowl president Gary Stokan wants to set the record straight: His bowl always wanted Duke. Speaking Thursday during a news conference at the Blue Devils' team headquarters, Stokan shot down rumors that he would have preferred another ACC team in his bowl.
