Elegance for Eating and Entertaining

Here’s a spacious kitchen that’s modern, comfortable, casual, and clutter-free.

Chris Wheeler and Michael Zononi’s kitchen is a chic, clublike hub of a spacious, elegant entertaining zone. With fashionably sleek contours, shimmering finishes, and a serene color scheme, the space’s functionality is almost hidden in the 4,000-square-foot residence.

Chris and Michael typically entertain six to 20 people at a time and the kitchen—at nearly 300 square feet—suits their entertaining style. A glacial-blue lava stone tops a work island designed in stations with lots of outlets. “Everyone gets a recipe for a different part of the meal, and they help us cook,” says Michael, who whisks away dirty dishes into a narrow scullery tucked behind the work area. “If you can’t see it, it doesn’t exist,” he jokes about dirty dishes. That galley—which leads to a deck with a grill—has a dishwasher, sink, and food storage.

The couple didn’t want a formal dining room they’d never use. They opted for a telescoping table that glides in and out of the kitchen on ball bearings. A gently curving island and a kiosklike cocktail table, wrapped around a structural column, provide locations for both simple and social dining.
