Clemson Extends Purnell Through 2014

POSTED: 5:02 pm EDT March 18, 2008

(Sports Network) - Clemson head basketball coach Oliver Purnell has agreed to a contract extension that runs through the 2013-14 season, athletic director Terry Don Phillips announced Tuesday.

Purnell has a successful track record of turning programs around with stints at Radford, Old Dominion and Dayton. In his five seasons at Clemson, he has done just that, compiling a 94-67 record and turning the Tigers into a contender in the Atlantic Coast Conference.

His 49 wins the past two years is a Clemson record for back-to-back campaigns. The Tigers have reached the postseason each of the past four seasons and own a five-seed in the Midwest Region of the NCAA Tournament.

This past week, Purnell led the Tigers to the ACC Tournament championship game, losing to top-ranked North Carolina, 86-81. It marked the second ever appearance for the Tigers in the conference final and first since 1962.

Purnell is one of 31 coaches in NCAA history to take three different programs into the NCAA Tournament.
