Seminoles Dominate In Second Half To Rout The Citadel

POSTED: 11:09 pm EDT September 10, 2005

Drew Weatherford went 26-of-37 for 342 yards with two touchdowns and an interception, as 11th-ranked Florida State pounded The Citadel, 62-10, at Doak Campbell Stadium.

Xavier Lee added 143 passing yards while throwing for a touchdown for the Seminoles (2-0), who were coming off an emotional win over arch-rival Miami- Florida this past Monday and appeared sluggish throughout the first half before blowing the game open over the final 30 minutes.

Lee also ran for a touchdown in the win.

Chris Davis caught nine passes for 125 yards while De'Cody Fagg added seven receptions and 113 yards in the win. Greg Carr contributed 104 receiving yards and two scores for Florida State, which travels to Chestnut Hill next Saturday for a game with unbeaten Boston College.

Duran Lawson was 14-of-25 for just 56 yards with an interception for the Division I-AA Bulldogs (1-1), who were outscored 49-0 in the second half and got completely manhandled by the speedy, physical Seminole defense.

Leading by just three at halftime, Florida State put the game out of reach with 35 third-quarter points.

The Seminoles picked off Lawson on the first play of the period and quickly upped the score to 20-10. Four plays later, Leon Washington scored from 14 yards out to make it a 10-point game.

After The Citadel was forced to punt, Fred Rouse returned the kick 24 yards and Florida State was in business again. Weatherford quickly completed a 14- yard pass and moments later, Lorenzo Booker scored from two yards out to extend the lead to 27-10 with 11 minutes left in the third.

Another Bulldog fumble moments later led to Antone Smith's four-yard touchdown run with 8:38 remaining in the period and the onslaught continued as Weatherford found Carr down the sideline for a 40-yard touchdown pass, making it 41-10 four minutes later.

Carr's 10-yard touchdown grab from Lee late in the quarter put an end to the third-quarter scoring and gave FSU a 38-point lead.

The Seminoles added two touchdowns early in the fourth, as James Coleman and Lee each rushed in for score, for the final margin.

Florida State took the game's opening possession all the way downfield and quickly got to the Bulldogs' seven-yard line, but Weatherford was sacked and the quarterback fumbled the ball. Joshua Lawson recovered the loose ball for The Citadel and thwarted the drive.

After a series of punts, the Seminoles took over with a short field and finally got on the board as Gary Cismesia booted a 37-yard field goal with 5:12 left in the first quarter to make it 3-0.

The Bulldogs, though, hung tough as they picked off Lee early in the second period. The Citadel began at the 'Noles 13-yard line, but a fumble pushed the team back to the 28. However, Blake Vandiver's 45-yard kick was good and it tied the game at 3-3.

Weatherford was then intercepted on FSU's next series, but the Bulldogs quickly punted. The Seminoles immediately marched into their opponents' territory, but the drive came to an abrupt end when Weatherford was hit and fumbled the ball at The Citadel's 30-yard line. Vincent Hill recovered the loose ball and raced untouched down the sidelined for a 70-yard touchdown to put the Bulldogs ahead 10-3.

Florida State apparently did not like being down to a I-AA team as it responded with a nine-play, 71-yard drive before Weatherford found Owens for a five-yard touchdown reception to tie the game at 10-10 with 1:08 left in the half. On the drive, Fagg caught four passes for 42 yards.

The Seminoles then forced a fumble and recovered the ball at The Citadel's 30- yard line with just four seconds left the half. Cismesia came right in and kicked a 47-yard field goal as the first half expired, making it 13-10.

Game Notes
