Hamilton, NY -- Jamaal Branch ran for a one-yard score with
just 1:50 remaining to lift Colgate over Western Illinois, 28-27, in the
quarterfinal round of the I-AA playoffs at a snowy Andy Kerr Stadium. Branch only finished with 56 yards on the ground, but found the end zone twice
for the Raiders (14-0), who advanced to the semifinals for the first time in
school history with the victory. Colgate will next play Florida Atlantic on
December 13. Russ Michna completed 20-of-38 passes for 290 yards and one touchdown and
also ran for a score for the Leathernecks (9-4), who won a first-round
classic, getting the final word in a 43-40, double-overtime battle with
heavily-favored Montana. However, Michna's final pass near midfield on third down was intercepted to
seal the victory for the Raiders in the final minute. Colgate took a 14-10 advantage into the intermission, but the Leathernecks
trimmed the deficit to 14-13 via a 28-yard field goal early in the third
quarter by Justin Langan. The kick was his 11th straight field goal and it set
a Western Illinois record. Michna ran in for a score to put Western Illinois ahead 27-21 with 7:04
remaining, before Branch posted the winning-score. Chris Brown was 18-of-31 for 206 yards with two touchdown passes for Colgate
in the first meeting ever between the two teams. Travis Glasford led the running attack for Western Illinois with 81 yards and
a touchdown. Glasford also hauled in six passes for 78 yards.
