The star of the new Batman movie "The Dark Knight" is denying assault allegations made Monday by two family members.

British media said that Christian Bale was arrested Tuesday after his mother and sister complained they were assaulted by him at London's Dorchester Hotel on Sunday night.

"Christian Bale attended a London police station today (Tuesday), on a voluntary basis, in order to assist with an allegation that had been made against him to the police by his mother and sister," the actor's representatives said. "Mr. Bale, who denies the allegation, cooperated throughout, gave his account in full of the events in question and has left the station without any charge being made against him by the police. At this time, there will be no further comment by Mr. Bale."

Bale spent four hours at a London police station before being released on bail.

Britain's Press Association said that the women made the allegation at a police station in southern England Monday, the day of the European premiere of Bale's latest film, "The Dark Knight."

A police spokesman did not confirm the arrest directly. He said only that a 34-year-old man was arrested at a central London police station today "in connection with an allegation of assault."

The Sun newspaper said that police didn't question the actor Monday because they did not want to interfere with the premiere of the movie.

Bale stars as Bruce Wayne and his crime-fighting alter ego, Batman, in "The Dark Knight," the sequel to the 2005 movie blockbuster, "Batman Begins."

Bale, who made his film debut as a teen in the Steven Spielberg film "Empire of the Sun," has starred in such films as "American Psycho," "The Machinist," "The Prestige" and "3:10 to Yuma."
