Dad Likes Wine? Have A Party

If Dad is one of those guys who grabs the wine list at a restaurant before even touching the food menu, you might consider a Father's Day gift of wine.

But before you choose any old bottle off the shelf, get a feel for what Dad really wants. You probably have a general idea of what kind of wine he likes; you can either take the safe route by getting him one of his favorites, or find a new brand that he might not have tried.

If your dad likes the finer things in life, a wine-tasting party is a great way to celebrate Father's Day.

If you're really feeling ambitious, you could coordinate with Mom to throw a wine-tasting party. Invite the wine connoisseurs among your parents' friends, and you could peg it either as a surprise party or a preplanned thing, since Dad might have some strong opinions as to what wines to contribute.

If you've done this sort of thing before, you can probably take it from here: Have each guest bring a bottle of wine, make sure you have plenty of glasses, and have at it. But if you're new to the game, there are more organized parties available that can help guide you.

For instance, in WineLovers' Challenge, guests are told to bring either a red or a white from one of four producing countries and within a certain price range. They can pick a wine of any variety, but it should be one they think the other players will appreciate since points are earned on how the group rates it.

Another feature of WineLovers' Challenge is wine trivia. During the party, everyone reads his or her question along with its multiple choice answers. Topics cover everything from winemaking practices to wine events around the world to wine trivia.

Whatever route you choose, wine-wise, make sure to have a glass with Dad (if you're of legal drinking age, of course). After all, it's the bonding experience that really makes it Father's Day.
