Symptoms Could Be Ovarian Cancer Signs

New List Is First For Hard-To-Spot Cancer

POSTED: 3:28 pm EDT June 13, 2007

Several groups of cancer experts have put together a list of certain symptoms that may alert women to ovarian cancer.

The American Cancer Society and other groups have released a consensus statement listing the symptoms like weeks of bloating, the need to frequently urinate, eating changes and abdominal or pelvic pain.

Ovarian cancer is generally hard to spot and is one of the deadliest cancers. Historically, doctors have believed there are no early symptoms of ovarian cancer, which is expected to kill about 15,000 women in the U.S. this year.

But some experts warned that there are no highly accurate tests to clearly confirm ovarian cancer in women who have the symptoms.

The American Cancer Society said on its Web site that around two-thirds of women with ovarian cancer are 55 or older. It is also slightly more common in white women than African-American women.
