The wife of a man who is being called a Good Samaritan shared her story with the media on Thursday.

Travis Fortson stopped to help victims of a crash he witnessed on I-85 on Monday. While he and another couple of men were trying to help, a tractor-trailer veered off the highway and slammed into the group.

Fortson was the most critically injured. He was taken to Greenville Memorial Hospital, where doctors were forced to amputate one of his legs.

Fortson’s wife, Heather, spoke to the media on Thursday afternoon. She wanted to update them on her husband’s condition and talk about her experiences during the accident.

“It has kept me calm and at peace to know so many people through Greenville and the world are praying for his recovery,” said Heather Fortson.

Heather said Fortson has undergone several surgeries since the accident, and may have to undergo yet another one on July 16.

Fortson’s recovery will also require a lot of blood transfusions, Heather said. So far, 40 people have donated already and there are at least three blood drives planned in the next few days, she said.

“We have to keep our blood banks full,” Heather said. “There are so many traumas. People need the blood to survive.”

Heather said the entire family is thankful for the outpouring of support and prayers.

“He is on this earth for a reason,” Heather said. “We will honor God for sparing his life and allowing him to be here with us.”
