Kennedy Was Killed For Being Gay, Deputies Say

Family and friends of a young man who was killed on May 16 said they are fulfilling his last wish – making sure everyone is treated equally.

Deputies said 20-year-old Sean Kennedy was attacked in the parking lot of Brew’s nightclub by Stephen Moller because he was gay. Kennedy later died from his injuries.

Kennedy’s mother has used her son’s death to bring awareness to the need for hate crime legislation. She has started an organization called Sean’s Last Wish in hopes it will begin the process of enacting state hate crime laws.

“The laws today don’t have hate crime legislation, and that’s what we’re hoping to change,” said Elke Kennedy, Sean’s mother.

Elke Kennedy said one of the ways she wants to change the law is by holding fundraisers like the one held at Joe’s Crab Shack on Thursday night.

Hundreds turned out for the event and signed a slip of paper stating 10 percent of their bill would go to Sean’s Last Wish.

“Sean always believed in equal rights for everybody,” said Elke Kennedy.

Moller has been charged with Kennedy’s murder. He’s awaiting trial in the Greenville County Detention Center.
