WAYNESVILLE, N.C. -- Seven people were arrested during an undercover sex sting at a park bathroom, police said Wednesday. The arrests come after residents living near the park reported “questionable behavior” at the bathroom.

“A guy pulls up in a Taurus and another guy follows him in, and they come back out just chit-chatting with each other,” said Ben Parker, a person who lives near the park.

Police said they sent in several undercover detectives to investigate the complaints.

Investigators said they discovered a number of sex crimes going on inside the bathroom. The crimes include solicitation of crimes against nature, indecent exposure and sexual battery.

Police said an Episcopal priest from Florida, Michael Penland, and an art studio owner, Dane Burr, were among those arrested.

Police said they have stepped up patrol of the park in an effort to curb the problem.
