Charges Against Embattled Principal Dropped

Jane Blackwell Was Principal At Ware Shoals High

The charges against embattled Principal Jane Blackwell were dropped on Monday.

Blackwell, former principal of Ware Shoals High School, was charged on Jan. 23, 2007, with obstruction of justice in law enforcement investigations into a cheerleading sex scandal at the school.

Authorities said Blackwell lied to officials during their investigation of cheerleading coach Jill Moore. Moore is accused of giving students alcohol and setting them up with men for sex.

Investigators said in January 2007 that Moore was dating a National Guard recruiter and would use that relationship to set up some of her cheerleaders with other National Guard recruiters for sex. They also said Moore provided those students with alcohol.

Two Guard members later lost their recruiting jobs after they admitted to dereliction of duty and contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

Investigators said Blackwell knew about what Moore was doing and tried to cover up her alleged improprieties.

During a hearing in a Greenwood County courtroom on Monday afternoon, Blackwell's attorneys argued that it has been more than 90 days since the charges against her were filed. They said state law requires that the solicitor's office indict a person, drop the charges against him or her or ask for an extension within 90 days of the charges being filed.

The judge agreed that the solicitor's office was over its time limit and ordered the charges against Blackwell be dropped.

From the beginning, Blackwell has maintained her innocence.

“I would just like to say that these charges are false,” Blackwell told FOX Carolina when the charges first came to light. “I have done nothing wrong, and the evidence will prove that.”

Blackwell was suspended from her position as principal at the high school shortly after the charges were filed. She later resigned from her position.
