LAURENS, S.C. -- Deputies said they are investigating a possible link between the discovery of a body in Laurens County and the armed robbery of a vacationing FBI agent in Greenville a week ago.Deputies said the decomposing body of a man was found around 8 p.m. Tuesday in a field off Highway 14 by a passing driver.Investigators said the body may be one of the two masked men who held up an FBI agent in downtown Greenville a little over a week ago. Police said the agent was part of a group standing near the Peace Center when two men walked up with guns and threatened to kill them if they did not hand over their money. The robbers even fired a shot in the group’s direction, they said.Police said the agent pulled out her gun and fired at least one shot at the two men, who jumped in a car and drove away.
The Laurens County Coroner said the man found in a field was there for at least a week. They said the man died from a gunshot wound that entered his right side and pierced his heart.Laurens County Sheriff Ricky Chastain said it appeared the body was placed in the field and that the man was not shot there. He said it is too early to make any assumptions, but that they are investigating every possibility.DNA has been sent to the State Law Enforcement Division in an effort to identify the man.
