Mother Charged With Child Abuse

Family Says Injuries Were Accident

An 18-year-old mother was charged Thursday with abusing her 1-month-old son, who doctors said suffered a skull fracture and an eye injury.

Marianne Deyoung, 18, has been charged with inflicting great bodily injury on a child.

Deyoung’s family said her son Elijah was injured when his mother dropped him while she was having a seizure.

“When she reached over to open the microwave, she dropped him,” said Derek Williams, Elijah’s father. “That’s when my dad heard a thump and heard her scream.”

However, doctors said even a child who fell from a two story building would not have suffered the injuries Elijah has.

Doctors said Elijah has a hairline skull fracture and hemorrhaging in his retina. They said there is no way Elijah could have been injured by being dropped from his mother’s arms.

“They are trying to make it out like she hit his head on the counter intentionally,” said Williams.

Williams said his fiancé and the mother of his son would never do something like that.

Elijah has been placed in the protective custody of the Department of Social Services.

Deputies said they are still investigating the case.
