ANDERSON, S.C. -- Police announced the arrest of one person in connection with the shooting of a rookie-officer responding to a robbery on July 24, 2007.Police arrested 25-year-old Shantiago Smith on Monday after a 10-month investigation.Investigators said Officer David Fikes was responding to a robbery call at Churchhill’s Pub when the shooting happened.Police said Smith tied up the employees of the bar and tried to steal money from them. They said as Fikes was looking over the scene, Smith shot him five times.
Police said three of the shots hit Fikes in his bullet-proof vest and two hit him in the arm.Fikes survived the shooting and returned to his job just a few days after the shooting.Police offered a $10,000 reward in the case. However, Randall Williams with the Anderson Police Department said officials are still trying to determine if the reward will be paid out.Smith was charged with assault and battery with intent to kill, possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime, four counts of armed robbery and four counts of kidnapping.Smith was being held at the Anderson County Detention Center. His bond hearing was scheduled for Wednesday.
