GREENVILLE, S.C. -- A teen boy arrested on suspicion of homicide showed up at a Greenville County family courtroom Thursday afternoon, but his hearing was waived.FOX Carolina cameras were at the courthouse as 14-year-old Sam Young went inside and then left a short time later. Young’s head was covered by a jacket and he didn’t speak to the media.Young faces juvenile charges of murder, first-degree criminal sexual conduct and kidnapping. But the Solicitor's Office said it might decide to upgrade to adult charges.Deputies arrested Young late Wednesday after receiving DNA test results from the state crime lab. According to an autopsy, 8-year-old Dymia Woody died of asphyxia after being sexually assaulted.
Woody's family reported her missing on Monday night. Early Tuesday morning, deputies found her body inside the closet of a nearby home. The abandoned home is yards from where Dymia Woody lived.Only FOX Carolina cameras were at the scene Wednesday as deputies arrested Young and led him into the county jail. He didn't answer any questions and hid his face from the cameras. The night before his arrest, Young and his family talked exclusively to FOX Carolina. At the time, Young told the television station that he was the last person to see the girl alive.Young told FOX Carolina that he walked Woody home and then helped search for her after she was reported missing. During that interview, Young said he had nothing to do with the girl's slaying.FOX Carolina's Jade Hindmon asked Young, "What would you like people to know?"Young said, "I want them to know it wasn't me."Young’s parents talked exclusively to FOX Carolina about the charges. Reporter Jade Hindmon asked Young’s mother, “Are you scared?” Stephanie White answered “yes.” Young’s father, Frank Hudson said, “We’re just as shocked as anyone. We just want to reach out to the family.” Jade Hindmon asked, “Reach out to the family?” Hudson answered, “Yeah. We just want to get the family to understand our position, too.” Young’s family told FOX Carolina that they knew nothing about Dymia’s disappearance.Youngs father told FOX Carolina that his son told investigators that he and the 8-year-old girl had a “thing” and that they were just messing around on Monday when she stopped moving.Investigators with the Greenville County Sheriff’s Office said they believe that Young acted alone, but they are looking into the possibility that someone else knew what happened.Master Deputy Michael Hildebrand said, “We believe he is the only suspect involved in the incident itself. Now we will look at witness statements and other information to see if anybody else had knowledge of this case that they weren’t sharing with us.”Hildebrand said that Young is talking to deputies. He said, “The suspect cooperated with the investigators and he was willing to speak with us. But as far as him giving any details or motive or anything, I’m not sure.”Before Young's arrest, neighbors said they were suspicious that he might be involved. FOX Carolina asked Young what he thought about the accusations."(It) makes me angry that they would think something like that. I mean, before this happened, I mean, they were all goody-goody with me," Young said. "Now, that this has happened. It seems everything is coming to me, and I don't think that's right."Both Woody's and Young's families were at the courthouse on Thursday.FOX Carolina has learned that Young is scheduled to have a detention hearing on July 10.He currently is being held at the Department of Juvenile Justice.A candlelight vigil was scheduled for Thursday night in Woody’s neighborhood. Funeral services will be held on Saturday at 4 p.m. at the Rock of Ages Baptist Church, 105 Donaldson Road, in Greenville. Woody’s family belongs to the church. The congregation said it will also honor the little girl with a special remembrance at Sunday’s service as well. The church has set up a memorial fund for the family at any Bank of America Branch.
