On Friday, fire investigators were still trying to determine what started a blaze at the Campus Edge apartments on Thursday morning.

The apartments are located near the campus of the University of South Carolina Upstate.

The fire swept through building G around 4:15 a.m. Thursday, leaving 25 students looking for a new place to live.

The school does not own the apartment complex, but the housing department was helping some students find temporary housing.

Most of the students affected by the fire said they made it out with just the clothes on their backs.

“A lot of kids got out without their shoes,” said Greg Googer with the American Red Cross. “We’ll help them buy new shoes. Those are the types of things that’ll be taken care of. That gives them a sense of relief.”

Firefighters said the building had working fire alarms but no sprinkler system.

Although the exact cause was still under investigation, fire fighters said they do not consider the blaze suspicious.

USC Upstate is holding an adopt-a-student program for the next two weeks. The school is accepting donations of clothing, furniture and school supplies for the displaced students.
