A water main break in Spartanburg County shut down large portions of a road and flooded a nearby church on Sunday night.

The break happened between Blalock and Valley Falls roads around 10 p.m.

Crews completely shut down Blalock Road and nearby Highway 9 for a period of time on Sunday night because of the water gushing across the roadway. The break left a gaping hole in the middle of Blalock Road.

Highway 9 was reopened on Monday morning. Crews also reopened two lanes on either side of the hole on Blalock Road.

New Destiny Church, which is near the site of the water line break, said several inches of water poured into their sanctuary around 10:30 p.m.

Members of the congregation showed up to help keep the church’s equipment dry. People could be seen sloshing around in at least two inches of water throughout most of the church.

Crews said they expect repairs to the roadway to be completed by Aug. 29.
