A Greenwood woman pleaded guilty on Thursday to stealing money from the Federal Emergency Management Agency during the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

Prosecutors said 40-year-old Teresa Brown made two claims to FEMA for disaster assistance, saying she had been displaced by Hurricane Katrina in 2005. They said Brown was living in South Carolina when the storm hit.

Investigators said Brown received two checks totaling $4,000, which she cashed and spent.

U.S. Attorney W. Walter Wilkins said Brown could receive the maximum penalty of 30 years in prison and a $1 million fine.

Wilkins said Brown will be sentenced after a report is filed by the U.S. Probation Office.
