The mother of a boy who was beaten to death on Friday talks about what was her last conversation with her son. This as investigators said they may upgrade the charges against the boy’s father.

Anderson County Coroner Don McCowan said Jeremy Wade Dickerson died from massive blood loss due to bruising from being beaten multiple times with a metal mop handle.

An autopsy was conducted Saturday morning after Anderson County sheriff's deputies found the 7-year-old boy dead in an Easley home Friday.

McCowan said it appears the boy died sometime early Friday morning. He said Jeremy was dead several hours prior to his father calling 911.

"It's the most disturbing case I’ve worked involving a child death," said McCowan.

The boy's father, 40-year-old James Dickerson Jr., was arrested and charged with homicide by child abuse and unlawful conduct toward a child, FOX Carolina News reported.

On Sunday, investigators with the Anderson County Sheriff’s Office and the Solicitor’s Office said they are considering upgrading the charges against Dickerson.

The boy’s mother said she never expected her Thanksgiving Day conversation with her son to be her last.

“He told me he loved me and that I would see him tomorrow,” said Misty Owens, Jeremy’s mother. “I just don’t understand how he could hurt his own baby and why he wouldn’t give them to me. Why did he keep fighting for custody? Why did he want to hurt them?”

Jeremy’s 5-year-old brother was taken into protective custody, deputies said.

Dickerson’s bond was denied on Saturday morning. There was no word on when he will go before a Circuit Court judge for another bond hearing.

A fund has been established to assist the victim's family with burial costs. It has been set up under the name Steven R. Brown for Jeremy Dickerson at the First Citizen Bank in Liberty, S.C.
