The mother and father of a newborn baby left in a diaper box outside a fire station on Friday have been charged with neglect.

Deputies arrested the baby’s father, 21-year-old Harold O’Neal, of Greenville, and the baby’s 17-year-old mother, who is charged as a juvenile. Both have been charged with unlawful neglect of a child.

During a news conference on Tuesday, deputies said the couple dropped off the baby because they had financial problems and were embarrassed. They said the girl’s parents did not know she was pregnant. They said the couple chose the Whitney Fire Department because they thought no one would recognize them.

The girl had the baby at an apartment in Greenville, investigators said.

Deputies said a Whitney firefighter found a baby boy wrapped in a towel and placed inside a diaper box in front of the fire station. The baby still had its umbilical cord attached, they said.

The baby was taken to Spartanburg Regional Medical Center. Doctors said the boy’s body temperature was 88 degrees when he first arrived at the hospital. Doctors said hypothermia can set in at 96.5 degrees.

Deputies said the mother has two other children, an 11-month old and a 2-year-old.

If convicted, both the father and the mother face up to 10 years in prison.
