Firefighters said a residence hall on Clemson University’s campus sustained smoke and water damage in a fire on Tuesday morning.

The fire happened around 4:15 a.m. on the sixth floor of Byrnes Hall.

Firefighters said the building was evacuated when the fire alarm sounded. They said the sprinkler system activated and was able to control the fire until crews arrived.

Capt. Bill Schivar, with the Clemson University Fire Department, said when crews arrived they were told there was smoke on the sixth floor.

Schivar said a fabric wall decoration appeared to be the point of origin. He said the fire then spread to a nearby mattress and bedding materials.

The building is habitable but cleanup will be required on the sixth floor because of the damage, Schivar said.

The cause of the fire was still under investigation.

No one was injured in the blaze.
