A 17-year-old Blacksburg High School student died Sunday after a single-vehicle crash.

Cherokee County Coroner Dennis Fowler identified the victim as Sara Jan Mullinax of 578 Old Buffalo Church Rd.

Mullinax was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected on impact, according to Fowler. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Fowler said Mullinax was a front-seat passenger in a 1996 Mercury that was being driven by her sister, 24-year-old Angela Beth White at the time of the crash.

According to Fowler, the pair was heading west on Brick House Road at about 4:25 p.m. when White lost control of the vehicle while going around a curve, crossed the center line, overcorrected and overturned.

An autopsy has been scheduled to assist with the investigation, which remains ongoing.

Mullinax's death marks Cherokee County's second traffic fatality of 2009.
