Authorities in Abbeville said a storm that moved through on Friday night had winds near 100 mph, causing major damage there.

The National Weather Service has not determined if the damage was caused by a tornado or straight-line winds. The weather service was planning to assess the damage in the Abbeville area on Sunday or Monday.

Officials said at least 22 homes have been destroyed; nine of those were mobile homes. Twenty-nine homes and five businesses reported major damage.

Scott Moulder, with Abbeville County, said that as of 5 p.m. Saturday assessment teams estimated $2.2 million in damage just to homes. He said that number is likely to increase.

Moulder also said the cost for repairs so far has been about $1.3 million. That includes city services the cost to the city for repairing utilities.

The number of people without power has dropped dramatically, although it could take several more days before the city is back to full power, Moulder said. City officials said they hope to have power restored to all customers except about 500 by Sunday night.

Moulder said some Abbeville neighborhoods have a big mess to clean up. He said that major damage was reported along McGowan Avenue and Haigler Road. He also said the communities of Taylor Town and Secession sustained damage.

FOX Carolina crews were in Abbeville on Friday night, just after the storms moved through and reported toppled trees, damaged cars, roofs ripped from houses and felled power lines.

One witness told FOX Carolina that she and her two children were inside their mobile home when the storm hit. She said that the winds flipped the trailer over and eventually destroyed it. They were able to climb out of the mangled remains of their home after the storm ended, she said.

The American Red Cross responded to the area to help those affected by the storm.

No serious injuries were reported.

In Greenville, the storms damaged some trees and homes in the Chestnut Hills neighborhood.

A woman who lives on Westbrook Drive said that she does not have power at her home and that trees and debris are blocking the road.

Greenville County officials said there was also some damage reported in the Faris and Grove roads area. They said it appears winds may have twisted the tops off trees there.

Tornado In Anderson County

In Anderson County, the National Weather Service has confirmed a tornado touched down south of Townville. The NWS says an EF1 tornado hit the area at about 7:30 p.m. Friday.

The NWS said damage was first observed on Dry Rock Road near the intersection of Andersonville Road. The tornado then tracked almost due west to the Snyder Road area before crossing an inlet of Lake Hartwell and re-emerging in the Sandy Shores Drive area. The NWS said the twister then crossed Double Springs Road before moving out over Lake Hartwell again where it dissipated.

Numerous trees were uprooted or snapped off along the path with the most concentrated damage reported in the Snyder Road area. Several homes received significant damage due to the falling trees. The damage observed by the NWS was consistent with wind speeds of 100-110 mph. Authorities are classifying this tornado as a strong EF1 tornado on the enhanced Fujita scale.

The Red Cross is providing mobile feeding to residents of Abbeville and Greenwood counties. Disaster assessment is ongoing.
