Deputies said a shooting in Iva on Tuesday morning may have been preceded by a burglary.

The shooting happened at 3018 Smith McGee Road at about 1:30 a.m.

Deputies said that 20-year-old Michael Phillips shot 38-year-old Bobby Phillips Jr.

The case was originally being investigated as an assault and battery, deputies said; however, new information leads them to believe that the shooting may have been the result of a burglary.

Deputies said the case was still under investigation and that no charges have been filed yet.

Phillips Jr. was taken to a hospital in Hartwell, Ga., but was transferred to Athens Regional Hospital for further treatment.
