NEWBERRY, S.C. -- Officials said Tuesday that Newberry Academy will be closed until at least Monday after state health officials identified two “probable” cases of swine flu among students there. Headmaster Bob Dawkins said Tuesday one student and a friend of a student tested "probable" after returning from Mexico earlier this month.Parents and school officials spent much of Tuesday scrubbing down walls, desks and doorknobs with disinfecting solutions.The state Department of Health and Environmental Control said that the results of their tests have been to the federal Centers for Disease Control for further testing.“(We feel) a lot of guilt because we brought it back to Newberry,” said Kemper Dennis, a student who was on the Mexico trip. “There’s already been one confirmed as possible swine flu and everybody is taking precautions and staying at home.”Two women who own a cancer supply store in Newberry are undergoing treatment after they believed they were exposed to the swine flu. The owners of Hearts Of Hope said they have closed their store until Monday to prevent spreading the illness.The American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life event that was scheduled for later this week in Newberry has been postponed.The Newberry YMCA asked anyone who may have been exposed to the flu to stay away from the facility until they receive a clean bill of health from DHEC.An outbreak of swine flu has been blamed for at least 150 deaths in Mexico.
