Prosecutors said that a Landrum man pleaded guilty on Wednesday to driving under the influence in connection with a crash that left one man dead.

According to Murray Glenn, a representative of Solicitor Trey Gowdy’s office, 45-year-old Ernest Mazur received 10 years in prison for his role in the July 19, 2008, crash that killed 44-year-old Terry Lawson.

Investigators said that Lawson was walking along the shoulder of Grace Chapel Road in southern Spartanburg County when he was hit by the front-left coroner of Mazur’s vehicle.

Lawson died at the scene, investigators said.

Mazur’s speech was slurred and he smelled like alcohol, investigators said.

A blood alcohol test revealed that Mazur had a blood alcohol content of 0.22, which is more than twice the legal limit of 0.08.

“This case is a good example of the danger of drinking and driving,” said Principal Deputy Solicitor Barry Barnette. “Ernest Mazur’s pathetic actions claimed the life of another person.”

Mazur was ordered to serve at least 8 ½ years of his sentence before being eligible for release. The sentence also includes a $10,000 fine and $2,279 in restitution.
