WOODRUFF, S.C. -- Debra Childers, the mother of a former Woodruff student, said she is not surprised by the recent accusations of hazing at the school. On Monday, deputies announced they are investigating possible hazing at the school in connection with the Woodruff High baseball teams.Childers said that her son, Daniel, was part of the Woodruff junior varsity baseball team a few years ago. She said that Daniel was repeatedly hazed by the team while he was there.“He went into the locker room and two fellow athletes threw him to the floor, and another kid climbed on top of him and was beating him in the chest and neck,” Childers said.Childers said the beating happened in 2005. She said that her son came home with bruises and sores. She said that the players assaulted her son again in 2006.“Other students started pouring water into his locker, beating on the locker with their cleats, and throwing dirt all over him,” Childers said. “The other (students) choked him, from what I was told, on camera for over 30 seconds.”Childers said she reported the incidents to school administrators and filed a complaint with police. She said the students responsible for attacking her son were suspended, but still allowed to participate in athletic activities.“The public has got to start stepping forward and letting people know what’s going on,” Childers said. “The school should do something to stop it and if something isn’t done, somebody is going to be killed. It’s getting worse and worse every year.”Investigators said they are talking to players, coaches and faculty about the recent accusations. They said a report will likely be handed over to school officials by the end of the week.
