Those who have racked up parking tickets could find their car immobilized soon.

The Greenville City Council unanimously approved a new parking ordinance this week that makes putting a parking boot on a car easier than before.

The new rule no longer requires a judge’s order before authorities can place mechanical locks on car tires, which make the vehicle impossible to drive. The process now requires only five steps before a car gets booted.

“It now goes through a parking manager,” said Greenville City Manager Jim Bourey. “He can authorize a boot and we can collect some of their fines. Actually, we’ll probably collect more than $100,000 in fines.”

Drivers with at least five unpaid parking tickets are eligible for the boot under the new law. If drivers do not pay up within 24 hours after their car is locked they could face towing and car storage charges.
