The Cherokee County coroner has ruled the death of a man just outside Cowpens a homicide.

Coroner Dennis Fowler identified the victim as Kline Wilson Cash, 63, of 2019 Battleground Road.

Fowler said Cash died as the result of a gunshot wound.

Police on Sunday released a composite sketch of a person of interest in the case.

Fowler said Cash was found inside the family residence by his wife about 6:45 p.m. Saturday.

"Mrs. Cash told investigators there was a man at their residence talking to her husband about buying some hay when she left to go shopping around 3 p.m. When she returned to find her husband laying in the floor unresponsive, the man was gone," Fowler said.

Sheriff Bill Blanton said Cash, owner of Cash Farms, is the owner of the home where he was found. Crime scene tape was strung up over the entire property, which spans several acres along Battleground Road.

The Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office is assisting Cherokee County with the death investigation.

FOX Carolina has confirmed the victim’s son is a deputy with the Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office.

Blanton said it doesn’t appear there was forced entry into the home.

Blanton said the person of interest is a white man, 6 feet 3 inches to 6 feet 4 inches tall, 250 pounds, with salt and pepper hair. He may be driving a small SUV.

Blanton said the vehicle was seen at or around the home between 3 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. Saturday.

"Mrs. Cash last saw her husband alive about 3 p.m. when she left him at the residence talking with a man who had come there to inquire about buying some hay," Fowler said in a statement. "When Mrs. Cash returned, the man was gone and she discovered her husband lying in the floor."

Anyone who recognizes the person in the composite sketch or has any information about Cash’s death is asked to call Cherokee County Crime Stoppers at 487-CRIME or Spartanburg Crime Stoppers at 58-CRIME.
