Reports of a potential drowning at a popular swimming hole were proved to be false on Tuesday, officials said.

The Oconee County Dive Team was on the scene of a possible drowning at a popular swimming hole at High Falls County Park near Seneca on Tuesday. Search crews combed the water, but did not find anyone.

Oconee County Emergency Management said the search turned out to be a good training exercise.

Oconee County Emergency Management Director Rodney Burdette said two divers searched for the potential victim using sonar after initial reports were received.

Witnesses said they saw what they believed to be hands come out of the water then disappear again, Burdette said. They also said they saw a pair of goggles floating in the water.

Burdette said when rescue crews came to the scene, they found the goggles floating on top of the water. But he said no one had been reported missing from the campground or the beach area at the park. He said there also appeared to be no clothing left on the beach area by a swimmer.

Burdette said the 911 call came in just before 6 p.m.
