Nearly 40 cars were smashed when a midtown Atlanta parking deck collapsed on Monday, and FOX Carolina has learned that a Greenville company was involved in the deck’s construction.

Greenville-based Metromont built the parking garage in Atlanta, as well as some of the parking decks hundreds of drivers use in downtown Greenville every day.

Parking decks at the Bi-Lo Center and Spring Street were constructed by Metromont, according to the company’s Web site.

Greenville City Manager Jim Bourey said there is no reason to be concerned about the safety of parking decks in the city. He said that a third-party engineering firm has looked over both structures and have ensured that they are safe.

Bourey also said the city is taking steps to repair water damage to one parking garage in downtown.

“We’ve identified a couple of things we are working on,” Bourey said. “For instance, in a very short time we are going to be improving one of the garages that exist. We are going to close it down because there are some issues that we think need to be addressed. That doesn’t mean it’s going to fall down, but we want to be very, very proactive to make sure all the garages are extremely safe.”

When FOX Carolina contacted Metromont for comment about this story, the person on the phone, Jason Woodard, replied “no comment” to each of our questions.

The cause of the collapse of the parking garage in Atlanta has not been determined.
