A JL Mann High School teacher resigned on Friday morning after being accused of sexually assaulting a student.

Jeremy Spencer, 26, of Simpsonville, was charged with second-degree criminal sexual conduct with a minor.

According to an arrest warrant, Spencer kissed and touched a 15-year-old girl at the school in May. The warrant said that Spencer then pushed the girl against a desk and had sex with her.

Spencer, a Latin teacher and assistant girls’ basketball coach at the school, was placed on leave on Monday when the allegations were made, said Oby Lyles, director of communication for Greenville County Schools. He said that Spencer resigned from his position on Friday morning.

“The safety of students is our highest priority in such matters,” Lyles said. “School principal Charles Mayfield and the school administration are to be commended for their thorough investigation and immediate and decisive action once this matter was brought to their attention.” Lyles said that Spencer had worked at the school for four years.

Spencer was released Friday night on $20,000 bond. He said nothing to the FOX Carolina News crew that was at the detention center when he was released.
