Deputies said Thursday that a teenager stabbed his stepfather to death after the two got into a fight after a game of cards.

The stabbing happened on Oct. 5 at 105 Carthage Dr. at about 1:30 p.m.

Investigators said that 34-year-old Thomas Mikolay, his stepson and another friend were playing cards in the kitchen. They said after the card game ended Mikolay got up from the table and went into his bedroom.

Mikolay's 15-year-old stepson, who was not identified because of his age, told investigators that Mikolay called him into his bedroom and threatened to kill him and pushed him to the ground. He said that when he got up Mikolay came at him again. The stepson said that was when he pulled a knife from his pocket and stabbed Mikolay in self-defense. The stepson said he then went outside and called 911.

The friend who was also playing cards with Mikolay and his stepson said that Mikolay became enraged while the three of them were playing cards. He said that Mikolay began talking about killing his wife and then came after his stepson and knocked him to the ground. He said that when the stepson got up, Mikolay came at him again and shouted a profanity at him.

The incident report said that the responding officer noticed stab wounds to Mikolay's neck, forearm and shoulder. The officer also noted that the stepson had blood all over his arms and blood spatter on his face.

The stepson was charged with murder on Thursday after Mikolay died at Greenville Memorial Hospital on Wednesday night.
