ANDERSON, S.C. -- The South Carolina Highway Patrol said James Ammons III, of Easley, was on his way home from his son's baseball game on Friday night when he struck 45-year-old Gretchen Randall, of Piedmont, and her 15-year-old daughter.Anderson County deputy coroner Don McCown said Randall died at Greenville Memorial Hospital Friday night. Randall's 15-year-old daughter was flown to GHM and was in stable condition as of Saturday afternoon.McCown said Randall and her daughter were struck while walking back to their vehicle from the Wren High School football game. McCown said the crosswalk is not lit well and it appears Ammons did not see Randall and her daughter crossing the roadway.Anderson School District One Superintendent Wayne Fowler said Randall was in her third year as a teacher assistant at Hunt Meadows Elementary. She had worked previously at Powdersville Middle School."Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone that has been touched by this tragedy," said Fowler.Torie Tourtellot, Principal at Hunt Meadows, said, "Mrs. Randall was a wonderful person. She was amazing with the students and dearly loved by them. Her passion for teaching was evident by the fact that she was currently working on her teaching certificate. You could not ask for a better teacher's assistant."Randall worked at Hunt Meadows with teacher Hannah Sharbo. Sharbo said, "Mrs. Randall was the best teaching assistant anyone could ever want. She was such a support to me and gave 150 percent to make our class the best it could be. We were the best team and often made comments as to how we even thought alike. It's hard to imagine what the classroom will be like without her."Counselors will be available at Hunt Meadows Elementary on Monday for teachers and students.Visitation for Gretchen Randall will be Tuesday from 6-8 p.m. at Robinson Funeral Home on Powdersville Road in Easley.Services will be held Wednesday at 4 p.m. inside the Robinson Funeral Home Chapel. The South Carolina Highway Patrol's reconstruction team is investigating the deadly crash.McCown said it doesn't appear any charges will be filed in the case.
