A cartoonist in Washington state got some attention in South Carolina after he depicted future Boeing workers in the Palmetto State.

Poll: Does the cartoon about Boeing coming to South Carolina in the Seattle Post-Intelligencer offend you?

In late October, Boeing announced its decision to build a second manufacturing line for its 787 Dreamliner in North Charleston, which is expected to create at least 3,800 jobs.

Boeing chose South Carolina for its new operation over Washington, where it currently has a manufacturing facility. The company said that South Carolina's standing as a right-to-work state instead of a union state played a large part in its decision.

David Horsey, an editorial cartoonist for the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, sketched a cartoon that was published on Monday. The piece shows five men trying to attach the wing of a Boeing airplane. The cartoon also features a moonshine still in the background, a sleeping hound dog and the Confederate flag.

The caption reads “How many non-union South Carolinian workers does it take to attach a wing to a Boeing airplane? Five … and a dog.” The men are also asking the hound dog to fetch duct tape.

Some FOX Carolina viewers saw the humor in the cartoon.

“I don't understand why everyone is getting bent out of shape over a cartoon,” said one viewer. “If you are insulted by this, then perhaps you are a good example of the South Carolinian the cartoon is attempting to portray. Relax and have a good laugh.”

Others viewers said that they did not appreciate the depiction.

“It’s sad that states have resorted to child-like insults because of a certain or any company choosing one state over another,” said Kelly Duncan, of Ellenboro, N.C. “I don’t believe Seattle has lost as many jobs as we have, so quit complaining.”

Horsey said that he was obviously making a joke and playing on regional rivalries in the cartoon.

"I'm sure that workers in South Carolina will do a fine job," Horsey said.

The depiction also covers a serious issue that is being dealt with in many locations across the country, Horsey said, union vs. non-union.

Horsey said that negative reaction to his cartoon is not out of the ordinary. He said that is the nature of satire. He said that the reactionary cartoon in The Palmetto Scoop is just part of the fun of his business.
