A former soldier who served at Fort Hood in Texas said that the threat of violence at the base is nothing new.

Fort Hood was the scene of a shooting rampage on Thursday that left 13 people dead and 30 others wounded.

Kelly Nations, of Piedmont, said he served as a military policeman at the largest military base in the world for three years in the 1970s.

"They'll get through it just fine because the military folks involved are used to adversity," Nations said. "You overcome it. It's one of those things that you're trained to do. The next day is another day."

Nations said that the threat of violence from murder or homicide bombers is just part of the reality of the world in which we live.
