A mother and daughter were killed in a single-car crash on Friday afternoon, Pickens County Coroner Kandy Kelley said.

Kelley said that 78-year-old Lillian Tate and her daughter, 57-year-old Deborah Whitmire, both of Greenville, were pronounced dead at two local hospitals after the crash.

Troopers said that the pair's car went off the roadway, hit an embankment and flipped several times before slamming into a tree.

Kelley said that neither of the women was wearing a seat belt and that Whitmire was thrown from the vehicle.

Troopers are still investigating the cause of the crash.
