PICKENS, S.C. -- Buildings and neighborhoods are destroyed after a deadly earthquake in Haiti shook its foundations."It was just basically crumbled," Kjersti Johnson said, who just returned from Haiti. "When I first got to the orphanage, Eric started calling me. He said mama and they both came running to me and hugging me."She went there to pick up 5-year-olds Eric and Luke. She and her husband, Erich Johnson, decided to adopt them two years ago while on a mission trip; however, when the earthquake hit, the adoption process sped up."We didn't know they were coming home and now here they are," Kjersti Johnson said. But before they got to their new home in Pickens."There was a lot of wallpaper up that needed to be taken down," Erich Johnson said.A lot of work needed to be done to a home that was in foreclosure that they had just purchased. So the work had to be done quickly. Volunteers came in and they painted and also donated furniture and replaced doors."Some wood on top of the roof along with the shingles were all replaced," Erich Johnson said. All the work was done by volunteers with the company Paul Davis Restoration and Remodeling."This was a situation where we could help turn their little bit of chaos into calm and make their house a home," said Janet Discroll, marketing director for the restoration company. "Every person that was asked said, 'What can I do?'"Eric and Luke are also getting to know their new sister Asia and their brother Jake. Erich Johnson said now he can give them kisses and hugs all the time, much like he did when they first got to the Upstate."It was a really strong, long embrace and it was like it was meant to be," he said.A fund has been set up for Eric and Luke. The "Haitian Adoption Fund" has been created at the family's church. If you would like to make a donation you can make it out to College Park Worship Center. at 8211 White Horse Road, Greenville, S.C., 29617. The center's phone number is 864-246-9000.
