A Greer woman was charged Tuesday in connection with a fatal crash that happened last week.

The crash happened near the intersection of McMurtrey Road and Liberty Highway just before 1 a.m. in Anderson County.

Anderson County Coroner Greg Shore has said that 20-year-old Julie George, of Greer, was driving a car, crossed the center line and hit a minivan being driven by 36-year-old Troy Smith, of Anderson. Smith's girlfriend was also in the van's passenger's seat.

Shore said that Smith died at the scene.

Smith's girlfriend and George were taken to AnMed Hospital to be treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

Shore said that George told investigators she received a text message just before the crash, which distracted her and caused her to cross the center line.

On Tuesday, the South Carolina Highway Patrol said it charged George with felony driving under the influence involving a death.
