Whooping Cough On The Rise In SC

Doctors Urge Vaccinations

POSTED: 8:43 pm EDT July 29, 2010

The resurgence of a deadly lung disease in South Carolina could put your child at risk.

State health officials said the number of South Carolina cases has increase from 62 in 2008 to 114 in 2009.

In the first six months of 2010 there have been 168 reported cases.

Physicians say symptoms start out very similar to a cold, including a runny nose, stuffy nose, sneezing, red, watery eyes, mild fever, and dry cough.

Physicians recommend parents, grandparents or anyone who might care for a child get vaccinated.

They say most kids get vaccinated as a child, but need to be revaccinated because it wears off between the ages of 5 and 10.
