Carolina Panthers 2009 NFL Draft Review

(Sports Network) -

2 - Everette Brown, DE/OLB, Florida State (6-1, 256); 2 - Sherrod Martin, DB, Troy (6-1, 198); 3 - Corvey Irvin, DT, Georgia (6-3, 301); 4 - Mike Goodson, RB, Texas A&M (6-0, 208); 4 - Tony Fiammetta, FB, (6-0, 245); 5 - Duke Robinson, OL, Oklahoma (6-5, 329); 7 - Captain Munnerlyn, CB, South Carolina (5-8, 182)

Analysis: The Panthers moved up to the No. 43 spot in order to select Brown, who was one of the major fallers of the first day, as some had the edge player projected as a Top-10 talent. Brown isn't a sure thing, but has strong character and will look good either opposite Julius Peppers (as a pass rusher) or next to him (as an outside linebacker). Martin was a prudent pick later in the second round, as he possesses the ability to play either cornerback or safety. Irvin, the team's third-round pick, has upside but may not be NFL- ready in year one. Goodson was an interesting pick in round four, given that the team passed up local product Andre Brown (N.C. State) to take a player who will be no better than a third-stringer. With their next pick, the Panthers made Fiammetta the first fullback selected. The fifth-rounder Robinson can play all three o-line positions and is likely to play a role with the Panthers at some point in the near future.

Bottom Line: Got plenty of value despite not having a first-round pick, and quietly had a very good couple of days.

Grade: A-
