GREENVILLE, S.C. -- South Carolina bikers would be able to run some red lights under a measure headed to the Gov. Mark Sanford’s desk. The Senate and House agreed Thursday on a bill allowing motorcyclists, mo-ped drivers and bicyclists to go through a stop light after waiting for two minutes if the light does not change and the intersection is clear. Some motorcyclists said although the measure sounds dangerous, it makes sense to them because motorcycles are not heavy enough to trip the road sensors that change some red lights.“The sensors in the road sometimes don’t pick up the small mass of a motorcycle,” said Mike Tucker of the Harley Davidson Store in Greenville. “If you can already turn right on red after a stop when it’s safe, you should be able to leave an intersection when it’s safe on a motorcycle. Two minutes is plenty of time to wait.”
Some drivers said they think the proposed law will make the roads unsafe.“I think there’s going to be more accidents,” said Tracy Riddle, a Greenville driver. “It’s ridiculous.”Gov. Sanford’s office said the bill is common sense legislation that will keep motorcycles rolling on South Carolina roads.
