Race Car Driver Wants Safer Track

Josh Hoots was behind the wheel when his race car plowed over an embankment and into the audience at the Cherokee Speedway, pinning a woman beneath the vehicle.

Now, Hoots is putting the breaks on racing at the speedway until they make some safety changes.

Hoots’ car was traveling at approximately 100 mph when it crossed the embankment on July 3.

“Next thing I know, I was climbing out of the race car and they told me that the lady was under the car,” Hoots said. “After I found out there was someone under the car, I went crazy.”

The woman suffered a broken leg, cuts, and bruises.

Vote: Should Cherokee Speedway rethink the safety barriers around their track?

Due to communication error, the rescue squad was not on site at the time of the accident. Cherokee Speedway issued an apology to fans, drivers and the family of the woman.

Hoots said the accident could have been prevented.

“If the wall had been a proper concrete wall, and at least four or five feet tall and straight, it would have been fine,” Hoots said.

Instead, there are two walls that are each about two to three feet tall and slanted at an angle, instead of up and down.

“If somebody went to flipping out of that, there is no way that it would stop them and people stand right up against it,” said Hoots.

Hoots said at least one car has made it past the barrier each time he’s raced at Cherokee Speedway. In two years there have been three cars to cross the first barrier.

“I won’t be back, I promise you that, until they fix the track,” Hoots said.

Cherokee Speedway did not immediately respond, but issued a statement on TrackForums.com saying the track is currently looking at several options that will assure fans' safety.
