Minor League Brawl Results In 17 Ejections

Pitcher Arrested After Injuring Fan

A 10-minute, bench-clearing brawl highlighted Thursday's Class-A minor league game between affiliates of the Cincinnati Reds and the Chicago Cubs.

The first-inning skirmish resulted in 15 players and both managers being ejected. However, league President George Spelius reversed the ejections after hearing complaints from both teams who didn't want to use two pitchers as outfielders for the remainder of the game.

The game was completed and Dayton, the Reds affiliate, defeated Peoria, the Cubs' team, 6-5.

According to the Dayton Daily News, players from both teams threw and landed real punches. Peoria pitcher Julio Castillo tried to hit a Dayton player with a thrown baseball, but he instead hit a fan in the stands. The fan was taken to the hospital and Castillo was arrested.

ESPN reported Castillo faces one count of felonious assault and was being held at the Montgomery County Jail.

The melee began when Dayton manager Donnie Scott complained about Peoria's pitching. After a Peoria pitcher was hit in the top of the first inning, two Dayton batters were hit -- one in the head -- in the bottom half of the inning. When a pitch to a third batter was thrown up and inside to another Dayton batter, the team's manager complained to the home plate umpire. Peoria's manager then joined the discussion and the two managers began arguing. Soon both benches cleared.

Spelius is expected to take appropriate action against the teams and players once video footage has been reviewed.
