GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Eight Abbeville High School athletes and three Southside High School players were suspended after a brawl at the team's basketball game at Southside on Wednesday night.Southside High School was hosting Abbeville High School on Wednesday night. A scorekeeper at the game told FOX Carolina that the referees made some controversial calls during the game, but Southside beat Abbeville 61-51.Deputies said that when fans started to run out onto the floor after the victory, two players began fighting. They said that the fight spilled into the crowd. They said that before it was over, even some parents were throwing punches."The people in the stands were just more like shocked because it turned from a good game to something violent," said Trey Fisher, who was at Wednesday's game. "We were just supposed to be playing a game of basketball. They're trying to hurt each other and cause harm to each other."No one was injured during the brawl.Officials at both schools said that they will be reviewing video from the game to determine what happened."We take good pride in the character of our kids," said Abbeville High School Principal Dr. Steve Glenn, who was also at Wednesday's game. "For something like this to happen, it's out of character for our kids. We are very embarrassed that it did happen."Glenn said that the eight students in question provided written statements to officials which will be handed over to the South Carolina High School League. He said that the students will have to serve whatever punishment league officials determine is appropriate."It's very unfortunate," Glenn said. "We have owned up to what we did and now we will have to wait to see what our punishment will be."There was no immediate word on whether charges will be filed in connection with the fight.
