ASHEVILLE, N.C.President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle Obama arrived in Asheville on Friday for the first family's weekend vacation in the mountains.
Air Force One landed at Asheville Regional Airport at about 1:10 p.m.
Members of numerous media outlets were on hand for the arrival of the first couple. The couple's two children, Sasha and Malia, did not accompany their parents on the weekend jaunt.
From the airport, the presidential motorcade made its way down Interstates 26 and 240, exiting at Riverside Drive, The White House said. The president and first lady stopped at 12 Bones Smokehouse, where they greeted patrons and enjoyed two rib plates.
At about 3:30 p.m., the Obamas enjoyed a hike along the Blue Ridge Parkway. The president was sporting a baseball cap, while the first lady wore a black hat.
It has been rumored that the Obamas will be staying at the Grove Park Inn. The hotel would not confirm that with FOX Carolina, but the facility's Web site said that the resort will be operating at a heightened state of security. The statement also said that vehicles entering the hotel grounds will be subject to search.
The President was playing golf all afternoon at the Grove Park Inn according to the Citizens Times. We are told he played golf with two friends from Chicago, Marty Nesbitt and Dr. Eric Whittaker. We witnessed secret service agents outside the Grove Park Inn around sundown. That's when we're told the President was finishing up his golf game.
According to the White House, the president and first lady have not scheduled any public events during their stay in Asheville. Some have speculated that the couple may visit The Biltmore mansion, while others said they think the president will take in a round of golf.
The weather may not be the highlight of the presidential vacation, however. Showers and storms are in the forecast for late Saturday afternoon into Sunday.
The president last visited Asheville in October 2008, while he was still on the campaign trail. The then-campaigning Obama ate at 12 Bones Smokehouse then, as well.
