Police: Ohio Man Brought Gun To Asheville Airport As President Left 4-26-2010
An Ohio man was arrested on Sunday after police said that he brought a gun to the Asheville Regional Aiport as President Barack Obama was leaving. Joseph Sean McVey, 23, of Coshocton, Ohio, was charged with going armed in terror of the public. Investigators of the Asheville Regional Airport Police Department said that McVey pulled into the airport parking lot in a car equipped with law enforcement-style lights, an antenna and a digital camera mounted in the front window. They said that as officers and Secret Service agents approached McVey they noticed he was armed and listening to a hand-held radio. McVey was arrested after he presented authorities with an invalid drivers license, police said. Police said that a search of McVeys car turned up police scanners, which they said McVey was using to monitor local law enforcement agencies. They said that a working siren was also found. Asheville Regional Airport police are still investigating. McVey was being held at the Buncombe County Detention Center on $100,000 bond. During a hearing on Monday, McVey selected an attorney and has his next court date set for June 10. If convicted, McVey could face up to four months in jail. The president and first lady were in Asheville over the weekend for a brief vacation. The president was leaving for West Virgina on Sunday to attend a memorial service for the miners who were killed in an explosion there earlier this month. The first lady had left on a different airplane earlier in the day.
