Cherokee County Coroner Dennis Fowler said a 49-year-old Rock Hill woman drowned in the Broad River near Blacksburg on Friday.
Fowler identified the victim as Teresa Ann Laney, of 1505 Norris Drive.
According to Fowler, Laney entered the water at the Pick Hill boat access area at about 7:10 p.m. while a friend on shore, identified as Ray Rudder, also of Rock Hill, inflated a rubber kayak the two had planned to use in the river.
"Mr. Rudder said Ms. Laney told him she was hot and was going to get in the water," Fowler said. "When Mr. Rudder called out for her about five minutes later, she did not answer and he walked down the shore. Some people in a boat told him they had spotted a woman floating some 15 feet from shore and had called 911."
Fowler said Rudder and the people in the boat were able to pull Laney from the water, which was about 5 feet deep, and begin CPR.
Laney was transported to Upstate Carolina Medical Center by ambulance, where she was pronounced dead, Fowler said.
Fowler said an autopsy performed Saturday morning confirmed that Laney drowned, however he said he is still awaiting toxicology results before issuing a final ruling.
Fowler said Laney is the second person to drown in Cherokee County in as many weeks, and the investigation into her death remains ongoing.
